Why Is My PBS Activation Not Working?
You've installed the PBS app, found your activation code, headed to pbs.org/activate — and something went wrong. Don't worry. PBS activation issues are usually quick to resolve once you identify the cause. This guide covers the most common problems and step-by-step fixes for each one.
Problem 1: Activation Code Has Expired
Symptom: You enter the code at pbs.org/activate but get an error saying the code is invalid or expired.
Why it happens: PBS activation codes are time-sensitive and typically expire within 15–30 minutes of being generated.
Fix:
- Return to the PBS app on your TV or streaming device.
- Navigate back to the Sign In / Activate screen.
- A new code will be generated automatically.
- Enter the new code at pbs.org/activate promptly — within a few minutes.
Problem 2: Wrong PBS Account or Not Signed In
Symptom: Activation appears to succeed on the website, but the app on your TV doesn't log in or stays on the activation screen.
Why it happens: You may have multiple PBS accounts or activated with a different account than expected.
Fix:
- Double-check which PBS account email you used at pbs.org/activate.
- Make sure you're logged in to the correct account on the PBS website before entering the code.
- On your TV app, go back and regenerate a new code, then try again with the confirmed account.
Problem 3: App Doesn't Refresh After Activation
Symptom: You successfully activated on the website but the TV screen still shows the activation code page.
Fix:
- Wait 30–60 seconds — sometimes the app takes a moment to detect the activation.
- Press the back button on your remote and reopen the PBS app.
- If that doesn't work, fully close the PBS app and relaunch it. You should be signed in automatically.
- Still stuck? Restart your streaming device (unplug from power for 30 seconds) and reopen the PBS app.
Problem 4: PBS Passport Content Not Appearing After Activation
Symptom: You're signed in but Passport-labeled content is still locked or shows a prompt to become a member.
Why it happens: Your PBS account may not yet be linked to your Passport membership, or the membership hasn't fully processed.
Fix:
- Visit pbs.org and sign in to your account.
- Go to your account settings and check your membership status.
- If your donation was recent, allow up to 24 hours for the Passport benefit to activate.
- Confirm that the email on your PBS account matches the email used when you made your donation to your local station.
- Contact your local PBS station's membership department if the issue persists beyond 24 hours.
Problem 5: pbs.org/activate Page Not Loading
Symptom: The activation page won't load or gives a browser error.
Fix:
- Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).
- Clear your browser cache and cookies, then reload.
- Disable any ad blockers or browser extensions temporarily and try again.
- Try from a different device (phone instead of computer, or vice versa).
Problem 6: PBS App Keeps Asking to Activate Again
Symptom: Every time you open the PBS app, it asks you to activate again even though you've done it before.
Why it happens: The app may be losing your session data, often due to an app update, device restart, or cache issue.
Fix:
- Uninstall and reinstall the PBS app on your device.
- Make sure your streaming device's firmware is up to date.
- After reinstalling, activate once more — this usually resolves persistent sign-in loops.
Still Having Trouble?
If none of the above solutions work, visit the PBS Help Center at help.pbs.org for additional support resources, or reach out to your local PBS member station.
